Free Backpacks & School Supplies for Kids – New Port Richey, Florida

As you all know, it’s almost time for back-to-school. With the economy the way it is, times are hard for just about everyone. Thanks to LifePoint Christian Church of New Port Richey, FL and their volunteers, they are hoping to help anywhere from 300-500 kids have a new backpack filled with school supplies!

Last year, LifePoint Christian Church gave away 200 backpacks. This year, they are going to give away more, but are unsure of the numbers at this time. Reverend Mike Kirby estimates between 300-500.

The backpacks will come in 2 “sizes” – one for Kindergartners through 5th graders and another for 6th through 12th graders. The backpacks will include needed school supplies!

New Port Richey Police Department will be there distributing free ID Kits, gun safety locks and children’s bike helmets. The K-9 unit will also be there to entertain as well as educate.

McGruff the Crime Dog will be there thanks to Pasco Sheriff’s Office with information about different organizations such as: SADD (students against drunk driving), Drug Abuse Resistance Education and Gang Resistance Education and Training.

Thanks to the New Port Richey Fire Department, your children can “test” their aim with some target practice using their fire hose!

Last year the church also set up a bounce house, as well as a hot dog stand and snow cone stand. This year, they have not specified what other events they are having, but they have said that there will be free food and drinks.

This year’s event, the “Back to School Spectacular” will be held in the church’s parking lot, located at:6219 River Road, New Port Richey, FL, from 10am until 3pm on Saturday, August 8th, 2009.

Anyone out there interested in donating, there is still plenty of time! Donations of food, beverages, and money for backpacks and supplies are always needed.
