Free Backpacks & School Supplies for Kids – New Port Richey, Florida

July 15, 2009 · Leave a Comment

As you all know, it’s almost time for back-to-school. With the economy the way it is, times are hard for just about everyone. Thanks to LifePoint Christian Church of New Port Richey, FL and their volunteers, they are hoping to help anywhere from 300-500 kids have a new backpack filled with school supplies! :)

Last year, LifePoint Christian Church gave away 200 backpacks. This year, they are going to give away more, but are unsure of the numbers at this time. Reverend Mike Kirby estimates between 300-500.

The backpacks will come in 2 “sizes” – one for Kindergartners through 5th graders and another for 6th through 12th graders. The backpacks will include needed school supplies!

New Port Richey Police Department will be there distributing free ID Kits, gun safety locks and children’s bike helmets. The K-9 unit will also be there to entertain as well as educate.

McGruff the Crime Dog will be there thanks to Pasco Sheriff’s Office with information about different organizations such as: SADD (students against drunk driving), Drug Abuse Resistance Education and Gang Resistance Education and Training.

Thanks to the New Port Richey Fire Department, your children can “test” their aim with some target practice using their fire hose!

Last year the church also set up a bounce house, as well as a hot dog stand and snow cone stand. This year, they have not specified what other events they are having, but they have said that there will be free food and drinks.

This year’s event, the “Back to School Spectacular” will be held in the church’s parking lot, located at:6219 River Road, New Port Richey, FL, from 10am until 3pm on Saturday, August 8th, 2009.

Anyone out there interested in donating, there is still plenty of time! Donations of food, beverages, and money for backpacks and supplies are always needed. Reverend Kirby said, “When people donate, every dollar they give goes to buying a backpack, because we have no other overhead.” If you would like to donate, please call the church directly at: (727) 849-1251

Cancer update

July 15, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Yesterday I went to my NP’s office to schedule an appointment to visit with her to figure out where I’m going to go now, considering Moffitt cannot take my case at this time. It’s scheduled for Monday. Which I now have to cancel.

The NP’s office called me today to inform me that they are going to send me to a local gyn doctor for further testing… My appointment is going to be in early August unless there’s a cancellation, at which point, they could get me in sooner.

Talk about feeling not important… Shoot, I guess cancer’s just not that big of a deal anymore. Who am I to expect treatment in a timely manner. After all, they ONLY found it approximately 4 months ago now!

In talking with some friends of mine who live out-of-state, they suggested looking into patient advocates. My brain is completely fried at the moment with everything going on lately, so I have not yet had a chance to look into it yet. The same friend who suggested it also did some research and dug up a phone number for a patient advocate program in a town that’s approximately an hour-ish away. I think tomorrow I shall give them a call and see what they say…

I’ll keep you updated!

Moffitt update…

July 11, 2009 · 2 Comments

My assigned “counselor” at Moffitt is great. The problem is that she said that at this point in time, they cannot help me unless I have cash to pay! They do not have any funding available for me at this time!?!

Come Monday, I have to get ahold of my NP to find out – what now. I would have gotten ahold of her right away except that she was on vacation this past week and is not due back in to the office until Monday…

I also think I’m going to go in person rather than call because I’m thinking I want to get a copy of my records so that I do not have to play the waiting game again for an office to receive all my records.

With that going on, along with other personal life issues, I haven’t had time to do much of anything. I feel as though I’m stuck in a hole and I can’t tell which way is up at times… I really need to get my head out of the sand.

On a positive note, I believe I may have a job. I went for an interview on Thursday and I believe it went well. I’m supposed to hear back around Tuesday. Keep your fingers crossed for me please!
